Hey Folks, Let us please try to steer this thread back to Vanagons. I realize there is some merit to the diesel vs. gas debate but you are going too far off the beaten path. Here's Vanagon fuel stats. 2wd Doka with 1.9 WBX 16-18mpg with 1.9 TD 28-30mpg 4.86 R&P Syncro Doka w/ 1.6 TD 32-35mpg with 1.9 TD. 25-28mpg 6.17 R&P Driving average 15mph slower in the Syncro on the highway. Payback will likely be beyond my lifetime because I simply do not drive far enough. It is my opinion and experience that diesel engine conversions improved the resale value of a Vanagon. However, usually not to the level of expense. IMHO, most people are better off with a more modern gas engine vs. diesels strictly from a general drivability & economic point of view. Other factors come into play why people go to oil burners though.;-)
