The extra wire from the battery to the headlight relay is a nice idea. However the battery is not the real source. You also need to upgrade the path from the alternator to the battery cable. On the 86 and later vans with AC there are two wires that go from the battery to the front. One is for the fuse box and the other is for the high speed fan relay. That makes a great pick up point for extra capacity.

As much as I liked the cute meep-meep Herbie impersonation of my Vanagon's horn, I had one too many instances of needing the horn equivalent of a middle finger. Problem solved. Bought Hella Super Horns from RallyLights.com. I installed them this weekend. They are big, loud, red, and loud. Did I say loud? Video to follow, pic for now:

While I was busy adding the extra power lead and relay for the horns I also ran another lead from the battery to my headlight relays. Now I'm bright and loud.
