i grabbed the little shaft with some pliers, then carefully pried against
those, came off with just-less-than-worrying force. while you're in there,
be sure to inspect the odo gear, and if it's discolored or cracked(likely),
a new one can be got from odometergears.com, they are very helpful guys.
