Fails a basic sanity check. Wrong formula. A square of 3" on a side would be an area of 9 square inches. A circle of 3" diameter would fit inside that 3" square and not fill it. Therefore it is less area than the square and less than 9 square inches. A square of 1.5" on a side is an area 2.25 square inches. Two of them would add up to 4.5 square inches. 1.5" circles again would have a smaller areas than 1.5" squares so would be less than 4.5 combined.
