*Techron* is a patented fuel additive developed by the Chevron
Corporation<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevron_Corporation>,
usually consisting of gasoline mixed with 400 ppm of
polyetheramine.[1]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Farmer-0>
With
the introduction of Techron, Chevron
gasolines<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline> became
designated as meeting Top Tier
standards<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Tier_Detergent_Gasoline>
for
fuel cleanliness. Chevron gasolines with Techron were some of the first
gasolines to be named as a “Top Tier Detergent
Gasoline”.[2]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Upshaw-1>
“Top
Tier Detergent Gasoline(s)” are agreed to lead to better performance in
engines by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, and
Audi.[2]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Upshaw-1>Hyundai,
Volvo and Mercedes-Benz have issued factory service bulletins advising the
use of concentrated Chevron Techron in repair procedures for vehicles with
certain mechanical problems.
Techron is available at Chevron, Texaco, and Caltex stations in all three
grades of gasoline.[3]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Techron-2>
Techron
is also available as a packaged concentrate, for use with lower quality
gasoline ("under-additized").
Chevron makes a variety of claims about the Techron fuel additive product.
In one claim Chevron says that their additive boosts fuel economy. Another
claim Chevron makes is that “Chevron with Techron helps prevent the grimy
deposits that degrade an engine’s
cleanliness”.[4]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Chevron-3>
Techron
is said to protect the engine’s valves as well as combustion chambers from
harmful grimy buildup.[5]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Texaco-4>
Chevron
also says that the Three Big Detroit auto makers used their additive to
pass the EPA's regulations on
emissions.[5]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techron#cite_note-Texaco-4>
