Sorry guy. Not sure who you dealt with there company-wise. If you were dealing with an outside brokerage company why would you pay UPS the $50? UPS has it's own brokerage offices in most cities. Where was this? If you're in Canada it's different because of the Customs laws in that country(Canadians only get $50 in gifts as example) so that may be the problem. I don't know what to tell you except that I DO work for UPS Brokerage and the $200 cut off is correct. It's called a Section 321 by Customs and we handle about 200 a day. According to U.S. Customs, Americans can get up $100 in gifts and we get a bunch of those daily too. Over the $200 limit it would be an Informal entry and would cost you about $25 brokerage fee. Books don't carry any duty so there's no extras there. If you're shipping less than $20 worth there should not have been brokerage involved at all. Again, the post office operates under very different rules so that's your best bet for things like this. My self and one other fellow learned the hard ... > I have had cables from mister cable with less than 20$ and had ups charge 25$ brokerage fee > In December a speaker I was trying to get for a safety conf sent me his book from Atlanta -- as a gift-- ups cakes and asked who they should send the brokerage fee invoice to -- me personally or to my production company -- also named on the addressee label --- I told the brokerage company that this was a gift and if they sent me a bill for brokerage fees I would resend the package back with the delivery driver as Un-acceptable then ups could pay for the handling of the return ---further more I explained how this was robbery -- that I wanted to speak to her UPS supervisor -- then came the truth -- she did not work for UPS she worked for the brokerage firm and could not link me up with UPS -but gave me a UPS customer complaint line I could call -- repeating again that she was not UPS but also repeating the question -- who should receive the bill that was payable to UPS - I laughed at her and said you are not UPS but if I agree I pay UPS -- are you kidding -- so I says -- turn on your customer advice tape machine and get ready to listen to this again at future meetings -- this is robbery that no other courier involves them self in -- if you send the gift from the speaker with a further demand for payment I will send back with driver--- she argues with me that there is no way this could be a gift as it is an expensive text book -- so I explains all again - and close by telling her my language will soon lose the polite timber and regress to carnal grunts and cusses so I should hang up so I do not assuage her-- as she has clearly been sent out to rob me and she does. It even understand her role in this.... She tells me it has. En a pleasure serving me and wants to know if there is any thing she can do for me--- > Can you friggin believe this stuff -- > I say polite good bye and hang up-- > The book arrived two days later with the 50$$ brokerage invoice tucked inside ... > Un- friggin believable they still hold out hope -- bad UPS brokerage no treat > Regards > > > There must be a lifetime of thought in the last second if we are to live from moment to moment. > > On 2012-02-07, at 10:38 AM, "Kevin ..." <artbear26@hotmail.com> wrote: > > > Finally something I know about and can add to the converesation! I work for UPS in Seattle clearing things coming into the U.S. from Canada and I have to agree with Roger. For things like this stick with the postal service. Stay away from Purolator ( soon to be a UPS company and already under contract anyway ) DHL and FedEx. The posties have different rules and no extra charges. It wll take you a while longer to get it but if that's ok thn you're set. If you want to use a carrier like UPS make sure the value of the shipment is under U.S.$200. That way there's no brokerage, duty, or other charges and U.S. Customs simply lets it go. While we do an excellent job bringing this stuff in you do need to avoid the extra charges. > > Kevin > > 1986 Westy Sweet Leilani > > > Date: Tue, 7 Feb 2012 09:50:41 -0800 > > > From: rogerwhitt1@GMAIL.COM > > > Subject: Re: need valve covers and gaskets in Canada > > > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > > > > > > Dear importer > > > > > > When in Canada ...
