Subject:      clinking or clunking noise from right rear (of 86 Vanagon)

I have a click click or clunk clunk type of noise that seems to be coming
from my right rear.  It comes and goes and sometimes is so loud I think I
better pull over while at other times there is no noise at all.  I have yet
to pull a wheel but the joints don't wiggle any and the brakes don't seem to
 make any difference.  The noise is worse at slow and intermediate speeds
and goes away or is just not heard at high speeds.

Any ideas?
