I have had good luck by pounding a Torx bit into where the original 6 point was..Something like a T35 or T40 bit grabs quite nicely...

Well, I did it to myself (someone even cautioned me about this) , back between Christmas and New Years I pulled my dash to replace my locked up front blower motor, not a fun job! I stated here on this list that the next job, left side CV joints was next and it would be a piece o' cake compared tot the blower motor. I did the right axle last summer and it was not a bad job, however this morning on the very first CV bolt I tried to remove from the outer joint I managed to round it out. I even cleaned inside the bolt head with a pick and tapped the hex head socket into head of the bolt to seat it as far as possible, and it still stripped out-no need to go further at this point. I went to "Been There, Done That" and found the write up on CV joints with an addendum by Mike B. on removing the outer 46mm nut on the axle, yada, yada, yada. He says this is the "short version" of how to do this, and I'm not quite getting it-where can I find the "long version"? Not sure now if this is a job I'm going to finish today, it being Sunday and I am not off work tomorrow, it's beginning to look like a Saturday morning job for next weekend. TIA for any advice.
