How about a pet barrier like I see in a pile of SUV's to keep the mutts (or kids) in the back area.

I have seen something like you mentioned at a parts house.  Generic "fitums" of course, but should be able to adapt it.

Have you tried to fabricate something yourself?  Netting of various sorts can be gotten fairly cheaply from sporting goods supply services, and from fishing equipment suppliers (like http://www.memphisnet.net/category/nets).

I'm sure Josh Fancer would come up with something for a price.  In fact, I think he already has something listed on his site.
