The fact that the van is being used for long distance hi speed driving can override the desire for lighter easy starting oil. With enough speed, load, and time the outside temperature can have little effect on oil cooling. Although a healthy engine should do OK with a 0w-40 or 5w-40 unusual conditions can create oil pressure problems. An advantage of the synthetic oil is that it can work at temperatures lower than their grade indicates. Also considering that winter is almost over and it has been really mild I suggest staying with the 15w-50 for the trip. I have been in -4F weather and starting was not an issue although the engine did sound sick until the oil warmed a bit. That was with Fun Bus which has an external oil cooler with the original oil to coolant heat exchanger removed so it takes considerably longer for the oil to warm up especially if just idling.

Hmmm.......... . I think that Tom asked about Maine winters. That is, temperatures below 0 F, not 0 C. In parts of Maine, folks feel like its a warm spell when temperatures get up to near freezing in the daytime.

That said, I think that in terms of expected lows for the winter, SLC and most of Maine are similar. But, Maine is more consistently cold, so has lower average temperatures.

I think, but others may think differently, that oil that works in Utah will work in Maine. Atlanta? Not even close, winterwise, to either SLC or New England.

Filter felt much more heavy duty than the M & M's, but I mistakenly packed my stash of Mann's so I went to an Autozone, & they had the Mobil on the shelf. > > > > Depending on weather, I will be heading east/north on I-80 or I-70 then onto I-90 & I-95 to Maine next week, so keep your eyes out for an Ivory 84 Westy w/ large white dog as co-pilot. 2607 miles to new home, hope to make it in 5 days, not pushing too hard w/ a 4' x 8' HF trailer behind w/ assorted junque, bicycles, tools, etc. that didn't make the moving van. > > > > Anybody enroute that needs a BZ Shelf (grey only), get free delivery! > > > > I am looking forward to attending some of the East coast campouts this Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter, so hide your good looking wimin, & bring out the syncro dokas as I am interested. > > > > YMMV, > > > > Mr. BZ-what's a guy from Hawaii doing moving to Maine?
