well... remove the alternator/water pump belt and turn the w. pump by hand.. assessing for smoothness or roughness . if it's very smooth turning ..and no bearing play , I might be tempted to leave it alone for now. 87K is a lot on one of those water pumps of course. no amount of talking or writing can substituent for a real belt-off, hands-on, visual and feel inspection.

I run a small amount of water soluble machinist's cutting oil in my conventional green coolant mixture. Like a small cup's worth in the whole system. I have been doing this for about 20 years to countless cars and vanagons. Makes a fine water pump lube and rust inhibitor in my experience.

what part of Hawaii ? I was just in Honolulu for 8 days working on a turbo subaru engine conversion project.. and in a very genuine Hawaiian environment, not anything touristy .. must say I sure loved it there. Part of my future I'm pretty sure.
