I replaced the whole deal with one of the Italian made ones.....cost about a third of the new VW 

assembly.

And I now regret that action.....

It works ok, yet the aftermarket assembly is slower, doesn't go down all the way (leaves an inch up), and we had to remove
the OEM door speaker to fit it in.

Your experience may be different with replacing just a motor, as you asked in your inquiry, but I wanted you
to have my experience in case you decide to use the aftermarket assembly.

Has anyone had experience or heard of replacement of the stock vw
power window motor with another model motor without reworking the
regulator assembly?  I've been nursing my motors for years and they do
raise the window.  I'd just like to explore options like being able to
bolt up a more readily (cheaper) motor that will last longer and turn
stronger.
