re

wondering if I should just leave the square prefilter in place when I replace my fuel pump. Is there any harm to doing this? It apparently has been working fine for years this way.

I'd just check it .make sure it's not restricted or clogged at all .....that smallish pre-filter. and if everything is fine .. seems very releasable to me to just leave it like it is.
