You are probably correct that the ignition switch is good if the fuel pump
tries to run with it in the start position. Now keep in mind that every time
you try this not only is the pump running but the injectors also cycle and
spray fuel for startup. Do this enough and you can hydraulically lock the
engine as you fill the cylinders with gas. Breaking rings and bending rods
is the next step.
Get the meter or test light and check it out as I offered earlier. At this
point I suggest removing the spark plugs and disconnect the coil so that
when you get it to crank the excess fuel can just blow out. When you get the
cranking fixed put it back together and let it run.

Further investigation shows that jumping the battery has no effect, still no
crank. The spades on the neutral switch appear tight, as do the bolts off
the battery terminal.
The key turned to start powers up the fuel pump, so it can't be the ignition
switch right?
