Hi ..
one is 'suppossed' to turn the key on ..
then check that the warning lights are working,
rather than just hope in, and turn the key straight to 'start'.
See your Owner's Manual.
and ..if you do that ..you'll see the Batt light on, along with the
Oxygen Counter light ( they're tied together )
and the oil warning light flashing.
there are vanagons running around with some of their warning lights not
working ..
and since the owners never do this basic pre-start check ..
they are driving with non-working warning lights and don't even know it.
It's not that common , fortunately, but I do see it once in a while.
yeah..I have an 88 syncro with subaru 2.2 engine in it here right now ..
no oil warning of any kind working on the dash.
it's also good to turn on the key, listen to the fuel pump run, then
shut off.
This is just a nice check..
you can listen for how noisy or quiet the pump is ..
it pre-pressurzes the fuel lines ...
it's just nice to do, and you know more about your van when you do it
that way.
I turn straight to start often myself ..
but if I'm checking things out ...I defenitel turn to 'on' first and
look and listen,
then when fuel pump stops ...then I turn to 'start.'
