I've found that Mercedes gas caps of the same vintage will fit. I'm not sure if this works for both Syncro and 2WD. Thought I'd mention that since this is cross posted to the Syncro and Vanagon lists.
Since I'm a serial Vanagon owner and present custodian of a few T3's, I keep a known good gas cap for emissions testing purposes.
