The way I see it if that mileage is correct it should have the original engine. Maybe a head gasket or even a valve job(?) but an engine failure at that mileage is usually the result of support system failure (maintenance or operation), or chronic miss use or adjustment. Sometimes things happen but in reality I have yet to see a Vanagon engine actually wear out to the point of needing an overhaul without some failure that was caused by an outside influence. Seriously these engines are good for 160 to 250K with proper care and feeding. Even head gasket replacements are not all that big a deal and the cost without heads is no worse than doing timong belts and water pumps on many late model vehicles. If only the transmissions were as robust.

Looks like buyers might not be beating the door down, but it's probably a better deal (relatively speaking) than Jeff's favorite aircooled Westy. For that price I'd want it to be closer to "perfect" condition than this. > > http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/2900378668.html > > 1990 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper - $16000 (Mechanicsville, VA.) > > > Date: 2012-03-13, 3:49PM EDT > Reply to: sgxj7-2900378668@sale.craigslist.org [Errors when replying > to ads?] > > > > > 1990 Westy in very good condition. 138K miles on original engine.
