To better answer this question we need to know if you are planning to do the work yourself of have it done. If having it done the most cost effective solution will be to have your engine repaired or replaced in like kind. That may not be the longest lasting or best performing but will be the most cost effective. Anything else will require adding a cooling system and then replacing the heating/ventilation system under the dash. I am currently upgrading an 81 to a 2.1L water boxer. Engine assembly complete bolts right in with just adding a filler plate behind the rear tin.

Hello to all who read...

My 81 is knocking badly.. And I am considering a conversion replacement. Was just wondering which way to go, I'm looking for the most cost effective (not cheaping out) solution.. Any advice would greatly be appreciated!
