From the POV, (had done clutch, brake work, tune ups over the years), I found my "DIY" swap was pretty difficult. In hindsight, adding the water cooling parts was not the most difficult aspect. Fabrication of the engine carrier and mating the Vanagon and ABA engine wiring, were.

IMO, if you haven't done much wrenching in the past, and want to go with VW parts, the 1.8 8V + diesel Vanagon parts is one of the more bolt on affordable solutions. That said, one might find a good used Suby engine and required adaptation parts for a reasonable price, but I know little to nothing of that conversion.

In hindsight the most nagging of issue I've had is the exhaust. The beauty of the 1.8 8V swap is that it is a proven swap; one that works well with the stock DV exhaust parts. IMHO, this in itself is "worth the price of admission".
