Interstate 84 follows the Columbia in to Portland along the river, winding around along, with mountains and bluffs protruding. Generally speaking, it is hot to the east and cool to the west, and the cold marine layer pushes up against the Cascade range. The Gorge goes right through these mountains, the only sea level breach of the range, so the high pressure to the west rushes through to the eastern low pressure and creates spectacular winds. The terrain and the winding course of the river, followed on the Oregon bank by the Interstate, that creates all kinds of swirling gusty super strong blasts that far exceed the 'normal' Gorge winds, which blow all summer in the 20-60mph range. The RV crowd in their large powerful diesel class A mo-hos, or the ones being pulled by powerful turbo diesel trucks....they are blasting along at 75-85mph, into headwinds in the 40-60 range...apparent wind is then well over 100...which awnings and skylights that are 'RV quality' don't much like. There is debris all along the interstate almost every day... |
