The symptoms I'm seeing right now is that the van is hesitating when it gets up to about 4000 rpm (sometimes even before that, particularly when letting up on the gas). The reason I wanted to try a different ECU was for two reasons:

* Other threads I've looked at in the archives suggest trying a known good ECU up front, since it's an easy swap * I had the exact same symptoms a few years ago, and it turned out to be the ECU. Putting in a different (used) ECU completely took carte of it.

I never opened up that bad ECU, but suspect it was a case of cracked solder joints, which apparently is a common problem with these ECU -- there's quite a bit about that as well in the archives, including some great instructions on how to reflow the bad solder joints. Right now I'm assuming that my current ECU has suffered the same fate.
