What do you really want to know? Similar mechanicals as the Golfs and
Jetta's of the period. Besides the overall looks and condition here are some
of the common issues
Both the heater core and AC evaporator like to leak.
When was the timing belt and water pump last done? Tensioner and front
engine seals go with this.
Motor/tranny mounts.
Suspension struts along with the top bearing mounts and bump stops/dust
covers.
Front wheel bearings
Brakes-calipers especially with rear parking brake.
Manual tranny clutch/automatic price a replacement out.
Tires!
Power steering rack.

Like most older vehicles consider the purchase price the down payment.
Working on this will make you appreciate working on the Vanagon.

Any of my list sisters and brothers have experience with early New Beetles?
Looking at a 1999 New Beetle with 147,000 on it for my daughter.

It gets fairly good ratings on Edmunds and MSN Autos.

Any info appreciated!
