Interesting.  I've read the 1.8T sludging was only an issue in the longitudinal applications (Passat, etc.) and not the transverse applications (NB, Golf, etc) due to different pan configurations and some other details.  
 
It was on the internet so it must be true.

hello Pete  we work on a lot of these , they are a PITA to work  on  the
auto trans werent very good, bad about window regulators.  the  1.8T had
sludge problems.  do not let a timing belt break as it is an  interference
engine, the water pumps had a plastic impeller that breaks(new ones  can be gotten
with metal ones Graf brand has been the best.  vaccumm hoses  need
