What is a "fluted" hex key? The CV joint bolts either use a 6mm "Allen: Key
or the 8mm triple square, 12 point, or XZX bit. Yes different names for the
same thing. You don't need to touch the big nut on the wheel flange to
service the CV joints so don't worry about that. It is possible the joint
is still good but just needs to cleaned and repacked with fresh grease. Plan
to do this to all.

dear vanagoniters
left work today to the sound of the click click of a shot cv starboard side
appears to have expired and half shaft travels back and forth when tried ...
so after supper i get under there with my trusty # 40 fluted hex key bought
specifically for this purpose and it just turns in the hole
45 and 50 are too big ...
is there a #42???
old list advice seems to be ... angle grind heads off and replace bolts
...oyyy really ???
me just wants ot see if i can get away with replacement of joint and not the
whole half axle me very open to advice ... last one i tacked was on my 1969
type 2 and those were strait up alan head bolts
speak to me those who know ... and why doesnt the bently cover this repair
with steps rather than a few pictures etc. ...
and lastly there is an admonition in bently stating if my vanagon is made
prior to 25ZBH1192362 and my van is WV2ZB0255EH023522 which i assume is
after 1192362 ... then i must install new sleeves & axle nuts & torque nuts
to 500 Nm
which i take to mean torque till i have my tongue between my teeth and say
Nm 500 times or till i get to 360 ft lbs
but seriously folks is there a #42 fluted alan key regards
