A few comments: First, the correct spelling is Mahle. I only mention this to prevent potential confusion with Meyle, a different company whose Vanagon oil filter is not OE.

Secondly, be sure to buy the correct Vanagon filter from Mahle or Mann. There is a common Golf/Jetta filter that physically fits and looks almost identical externally, but does not meet the proper specs for the Vanagon engine. If you buy it from us or any knowledgeable Vanagon parts supplier you are safe. But if you go to a non specialist, just be sure they're not listing the same filter for non Vanagon applications; if so it's the wrong one. Same thing if you have your mechanic supply the OE filter. If he doesn't work on many Vanagons he may not know there's a dedicated Vanagon one, and just grab the Golf filter that he always uses off the shelf since it looks the same.

Finally, Bosch's filter is not an OE filter if purchased in the USA. In some international markets they do supply an OE Vanagon filter, but in the U.S. they ship a different, aftermarket filter instead that is rebranded as Bosch.
