The trick when driving is to make sure it's fully open so it can't rattle, otherwise the linkage will shake itself to bits. And be careful about rain, because as I said it's in a neutral pressure zone and stuff can come in as easily as out.

Something is very wrong, then. Dutiful Passage ('84) had to have the skylight itself replaced (the OEM ones let you know they're tired by starting to stink) some time in the early oughts. But when I last saw her in ?'07? the original factory gasket was still in good shape and working fine, along with the original mechanism.
