Steve.
Running with the Mann or Mahle filters which are known good - can't do
anything but help. E#liminates one possible source of problems. One of
the pressure switches is at the very rear of the engine kinda hidden
down behind the pulley at the rear of the engine. It's a bit of a pain
to get at but it can be done. Had that one go bad once, that is how I
learned of it and how to change it. Sometimes the wire on it gets
broken, knocked loose and just falls off. Make sure both the switch and
the connection is secure. The other switch is between the two cylinders
on the right side of the engine is is more involve to get at. Haven't
done that one. Maybe someone else will address that one for you. Sorry,
I can't help with the diagnosis.

BTW - I have 2 '88 GL's with the 2.1L WBX engines. Haven't had this
problem yet.
