Just came back from an all day trip to LA and back.  Mostly freeway, about 10 events of stop-and-go lasting about 5-10 minutes each.  Some city driving with stop signs and stoplights, maybe 20 miles altogether.  Some miles against the wind, some with the wind, mostly light breezes.  No mountain driving, but some longer grades in 4th gear at 50 mph.  Average speed on the freeway around 64 mph, checked with GPS, I don't push it very hard.  Was 267 miles for this trip altogether.

Filled up when I got home; I just let the nozzle shut itself off like normal, so am assuming a pretty consistent fill volume.  Arco AM/PM 87 octane, like I've been doing forever.  Calculations indicate 21.7 MPG.

Engine is original 1.9, never have touched heads or case, just shy of 198,000 miles.  Hardtop, with lightweight modest homemade camping interior.  Single driver, no passenger.  No heavy cargo other than normal stuff.  No roof rack or other aerodynamic compromises.  GoWesty 16" alloys with their HydroEdge tires, about 35,000 miles on those.

Uses a wee bit more oil than when new, I'd say a quart every 5000 miles, not bad.  Castrol 20W-50.  Oil changes at 3500.  Running as smooth as silk.

Thank you VW!!!  I think they did a good job.
