As a long time resident of Texas (I now live in Oklahoma) I have heard all my life about the heat in the SW being "dry heat," and how that was not so bad as the humid east. At a given temperature, that is true. But, when I worked in the east for several years, it was the brutal summer of 1988 before I experienced that baking feeling that is simply the norm in the SW when I left an air conditioned environment. 88 and 60% humidity? I'll take it any time over 120 even if the humidity is 10%. I've experienced both.
A dry heat can kill. Because a person's sweat is evaporating, he may not realize how much water he has lost.
