Absolutely dry heat can kill. Lived in NM for a while. Didn't take long to realize I had better take a water bottle everywhere I went. Never ever want to get caught out in a hot dry climate with no water. Dehydration can sneak up on you. Ever wonder why all those high plateau critters in the desert SW have such thick hides or waxy hides - lizards, snakes and bugs of all kinds. It's to prevent water loss.
