I got mine at Pep Boys about 15 years ago (original VW ones were 12 years old) before I ever knew about this List or the List Vendors; they've worked just fine all these years...and they have a lifetime warranty.  Nothing weird that I can recall about replacement of the originals.

Yea ,mine just went flat on me too. I got them from the local u pull it salvage with many other parts and am looking to replace with good new ones at reasonable price!! I know cheap parts are cheaply made. Any hints??

Careful with weird struts.  They usually do not work as VW intended. Westys, in particular, have struts that allow for closing the hatch part way and staying there.  My experience with the cheap ones is that they don't work like that and go flat real quick.  That hatch is HEAVY.
