On my '84 I added a ground cable from the battery lower bolt to the frame and that allowed the (VW 1.9) stock starter to do the job on my Subaru 2.2. I used the negative battery cable from the donor Subaru so it's good sized. It has been reported (on this list) that later years had a larger (different gauge) starter cable.
