`Always start with basics. If you havn't checked your fuel filter, for example, in a long time.....it's nice to know what's in it beside good gasoline .. such as water, dirt, or rust particles, and that it's not restricted.

I'd also go for the electronics and fuel injection. On my own similar van and system ... it started hiccupping once in a while right at about 4,000 rpm....after I drove at that rpm and speed for hours .... figured that was a weak or dead spot in the Air Flow Meter.... but it wasn't bad enough to worry about much. Then on a recent trip it started cutting out consistently. I popped on another AFM .....it stayed he same or got worse. I got off the freeway to an empty lot. I put on a spare distributor I carry, and replaced tired vacuum lines that go the vacuum advance and fuel pressure regulator ..she was fine after that.

I find that I just have to consider everything.. throttle switch making contact , timing not too advanced, fuel pressure is good, all 4 injectors are decent, AFM is decent. distributors ...1.9 ones are all getting old. I have had to replace a Hall Sensor once so far. ECU ..seldom an issue. oxygen sensor ...it's much better having that working. ( try it with 02 sensor disconnected ..that's always a useful test when she's acting up ) no exhaust leaks. make sure cat and muffler are not clogged. ( just had a case of a semi-fused cat. Did valve job and head gaskets on a waterboxer...when I ran it with the cat that had been in use the last whatever years..it sounded weird and didn't run right at all. Getting that cat off there sure helped ! )

also on that particular case..it had a two year old Python rebuilt AFM ..that didn't run for beans. I have seen such things as a 2.1 Air Intake Boot used on a 1.9 engine throttle body with a piece of coolant hose used for a size adapter ..and luckily I just happened to notice that foreign object jammed sideways in the intake boot. Coulda been chasing low power for a long time possibly if that hadn't been discovered .

I have bad bad Idle Stabilizers on 1.9's ...though only for intermittant not starting.

anyway ..'check everything and ever spec.' . they do get out of whack, and it sure helps to have known-good units to try, like AFM and distributor. and the list above of things to check is not even a complete list.

City gas mileage is still not where I’d like it but I ‘m going to check the highway mileage next week. Anyway, I have this persistent problem. If I accelerate to really high RPMS, like in 2nd gear, I get to a point where the engine just cuts out like a switch. This is 100% reproducible as it does it all the time and the engine runs fine otherwise. I don’t have a tach so I could not tell you how high the RPMs are. I do have a big clock so I could tell you what time it was, except in the winter. > > Any suggestions? I have an ‘83.5 WC. > > Thanks, > Bryan >
