I had a '71 once that at one time had an AC system installed if you can believe that. Most of it had been removed by the time I bought the van, and there were holes on each side, under the dash in some metal ducts where the AC system had connected. A *lot* of fresh air came out of these when you moved the blue levers on the dash. On my '86 I see that air goes through a structural member from the center behind the dash to the door area where it goes through those channels in the doors to the B Pillars and on back. (VW seems to like using box shaped structures to carry ventilation air.) I bet if you cut holes in those you would get a lot of fresh air toward your feet. I would not cut them though because I want all the frontal crash protection I can get.
