Right. From what I read thought it was one of the rear brake lines. :)

Some have done what you are describing, but you may find that there are other spots on line that are rusty/questionable.

I've only done the job once (images etc. of what I did: https://picasaweb.google.com/musomuso/LongBrakeLineReplacement# )

so am not an expert, but since you have flaring tools, would suggest purchasing line etc. and make a one piece line from regulator to rear "T' block. I don't have flaring tools so ended up with a join near the "T" block to lines going to each rear wheel. Seems to work fine though. I did this w/o a lift and IIRC, did not have to drop the fuel tank. But then you have a Syncro so that changes things I imagine. Would also suggest that IF you choose to make a long one piece line, look into the more corrosion resistant type of brake line. I used the VW green stuff. The green got scratched off in certain spots as I snaked it through the various parts. Not sure if the exposed surface will rust, but pretty sure it will sooner than later as a result.

This image shows a line clip that seems to break easily (11 in image): http://www.jimellisvwparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_product=5203890&ukey_assembly=738091&ukey_make=1066&ukey_model=15582&ukey_driveline=0&ukey_trimlevel=0&modelYear=0

Not sure if the part is NLA but there must be a suitable part that can be used. Securing the line properly to frame is important IMO.

Neil.
