Hi .. which injector/which injector wire does not matter. The ecu batch fires them as one big 4 part injector.

does the fuel pump run when you just turn on the key ? it should run for a few seconds and shut off.

the ecu energizes the fuel pump relay by supplying ground to it. I would probably undo the wire coming from the ecu and supply my own ground signal to the fuel pump relay. If that makes the whole thing run.. it would seem that there is an open in the wire from ecu to FP relay .. or the ecu is bad.

I have never seen either of those relays fail.l, fwiw. it's not likely they are both bad...more likely is a mistake in your testing method. ( you wrote 'both relays failed the test' so I assume that means you think they are both bad ) .

re

it seems the pump should kick on regardless of the ecu's state."

doesn't really make sense . the main relay powers up the ecu. the ecu triggers the fuel pump relay these two ways ... one....when it first sees power, engine not running ...it provides grnd to the FP relay for a few seconds then stops. Two, When the ecu sees the engine cranking via the ignition circuit and

distributor .. it once again provides ground to the FP relay to run the fuel pump and keeps doing that as long as the ecu sees the distributor is turning and there is an ignition pulse .

if you look at your ignitor ( assuming you retained the complete 1.9 EFI

and igntion ) you will see a white wire , ( of about 5 wires going to the igntior) that one white wire is the only interface between the igntion/distributor and the fuel injection.. if the ecu does not see ignition pulses via a turning distributor and the ignition pulses ..it won't energize the fuel pump.

we 'should' .. I'll try this sometime myself... with engine idling ...stall the engine on purpose to see if the fuel pump stops, even with the key still on. It should.. as that is a safety feature ..all cars made in the last 30 yrs ..if they

have an electric fuel pump ..there is some way to stop the fuel pump if there's a crash, engine is not running, but key is still on.

I have one 'chipped' 2.1 ECU .. the fuel pump never shuts off. It runs full time anytime the key is on.

Not safe really.

Think 'diagnosis' not 'part.' .

it very often is not a part or a component.. it's a wire off, a poor connection, something wired wrong etc.

One test I like to do is take the distributor in my hands.. or 'a distributor' plugged into the igntion wiring harness, and turn the dist with my fingers , with the key on of course. every quarter turn should trigger the fuel pump to run a few seconds.

Went through the bentley manual for testing power and fuel pump relays and both relays failed the tests and the manual says replace ecu. So my question is this.... Only thing i found in error was i had swapped the number 3 and 4 fuel injectors. just spaced out on this. Would this fry the ecu??Another weird thing is .. keeping in mind the relays are good. when i bridge the power relaythe fuel pump DOES NOT kick on. Would this be indicative of a bad ecu?I looked at the wiring diagrams and it seems the pump should kick on regardless of the ecu's state. Am i mistaken in this?So... if anyone is in the southern pa area that may have a good 1.9 ecu that i could swap in to see if it sorts my problems i would GREATLY appreciate it!Cheers and > Thanks,Jess >
