I think the prudent thing in that case would be replacement. Failing that coring out the end for 3/8" and caulking with a polysulfide or similar marine caulking compound. But I'd save that for desert-island stuff.

Edward, if it's seeping around the o-ring why not tighten it a few degrees and see if that doesn't cure it? But at the same time get a strong light in there and look for pressure cracks all around that area including the sender mounting seat as well as all around the molding line. If the tank hasn't been replaced it's due for them. They start from the inside and work out.
