Alistair, one of the items on the Roadhaus list of things to do to any "new to me" Vanagon, especially before departing on a lengthy trip, is to replace all coolant hoses unless you have positive proof that it was done recently. I could not prove that all were replaced, even though the person I bought it from said that all were replaced with the engine replacement. Paperwork did not include an invoice for hoses. Quite an expense, but I replaced every hose. Not every hose is available from ANY vendors, but there are work arounds. One work around I used was two hoses spiced together for one of the hoses that crosses over near the transmission. Actually, I think other than that one, the Van Cafe hose kit includes all except heater hoses, which are available all over.
