OK, see page 2 of this thread where there is a Group 31 battery under
the drivers seat, snug as a bug in a
rug: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=508148
The direct URL might be
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6015853#6015853
Actually, for these pictures, the rug covering the battery is not
there so you see the battery itself so technically we don't have a
snug rug in a bug here.
Normally, the battery will not be visible.
Note how the underseat-swivel was trimmed so it would not hit the
battery as you have got to be comfortable with that trimming off the
corner and rear edge.
Also, as for weakening the area behind the seat understructure, that
only area that has been narrowed is the area underneath the letters
3-09 50131 in the first picture. But as you can see, the area has not
been narrowed by much, and the table post still attaches as it normally would.
You can see some more pictures to go along with these here if you
want more:

You might have to monkey with that URL a little and I am not positive
that that link will work, but if it does, it will show more.
THE DEBUT OF SIZE 31 IN VANAGONLAND!!!!!!!!!!!
This new size 31 enables up to 125 amp hours under the drivers's seat
(Lifeline GPL-31XT http://www.lifelinebatteries.com/rvflyer.php?id=30 )
The 31 size battery pictured is the Sears PM--1 a deep cycle with a
monsterous 1150 cold cranking amps at 0F (compared to only 650 CCA fo
rthe Lifeline at 0F).
