Peter,

My experience with a Prius is that if you make a lot of short city drives, you will not come anywhere near 53mpg city. The 53 is for sustained city driving where the Prius is properly warmed up. But, highway miles can exceed the stated MPG depending on your driving habits. The best we have ever gotten was 63mpg highway and that was in the summer on a road where we could easily stay at 55 mph for over 200 miles.
