I've bought and installed dozens of these type of detectors in the past year because of new regulations for rental properties in my area. Since it wasn't always possible to have an AC power source, I had to find some which were DC powered.

They were $20-$55 each IIRC. But then I discovered placed like Lowes, Home Depot, & OSH carried 'contractor packs' there's typically 4-6 units in each pack. Net cost per unit was less than $10. Powered by a 9volt battery.

I don't know if they are suitable for use in a vehicle. In a stationary home (non-Westy), they don't get as much movement or extreme temperature ranges which might affect their operation and durability. It seems worth the hassle as it is likely better than not having one at all.
