You can do that, but it takes a lot of heat and you usually melt the insulation well up the wire. An easier fix is to by getting a short cable with the connector at your FLAPS, and then go to a real electrical supply store and get the appropriate size connector. You can get a butt connector with allen screws and wrap it with top quality 3M electrical tape made for outdoor use, or for about $15 get an insulated connector that does the job in a very elegant manner. You can find one here too: http://www.fish307.com/morriselectricalandlightingproducts-insulatedconnecto rs.aspx

My positive cable at at the starter end is showing corrosion and I have hard starting.  I'm thinking trying to cut the last 1-2" off and soldering a new copper lug on. The only one I found is closed on the end - see picture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/transporterjr/6987930200/in/photostream I don't know if I this style is good, as I figured an open end one could be soldered from both sides.  Any advice? - really could use some.  Also, cutting the 4/0 cable in place - does a Dremel tool with cut-off saw make sense? Happy trails,John
