The 2 piece pulley at the other end of the belt on the waterpump can be damaged from previous installation efforts. The outer half can get crooked during uneven tightening and then it can crack or get bent so the belts get eaten up.

The DV 2 belt configuration is superb and only a fool would ever change the setup but some people hate it ;) It is a little fussy. I thread a stud into one of the 3 holes to help align all the parts. After the other 2 bolts are started I pull out the stud and put in the third bolt. It is essential to tighten the 3 bolts in stages while watching to see that the pulley half does not get hung up on the edge of the center hole.
