Ralph,

I know nothing about the diesel engine in a Vanagon, so don't know if the following is even close to applicable. Several years ago I had someone replace a leaking gasket on a fitting behind the pulley on the water pump on my 2.1. All worked fine it seemed but when I went to change all of the belts several months later, the one for the alternator kept being thrown. Low and behold, the person who had removed the pulley for the water pump had put it on backwards. Scott advised me to check that and sure enough that was the problem and after I reversed the pulley, all was fine. I have no idea how the belt had stayed on during that time, but I can attest to the fact that a new belt would not stay on with the pulley reversed.

Worth a look,

Harold
