My experience is that most mufflers rot from the inside out & painting is a waste of time.

I do mine. I use 'Flame Proof' high temp exhaust paint. first the primer, then the final coat. Regular VHT has not held up that well for me. Flame Proof, especially with their primer first, does.

they stay nicely light gray quite well on my vanagons. My mufflers don't seem to rot out from the inside at all.

short trips are bad of course, winter especially.
