This is the best method I have found. The heat shrink is really important for strain relief. May even provide some degree of water proofing.

When I'm feeling like soldering on something like a ring terminal, I take regular crimp on terminals and cut away the plastic. I slide a piece of heat shrink over the wire then crimp on the connector as I would. Now solder the connector in place, slide up the heat shrink, shrink it, and good to go.
