The weak link in these engines is oil pressure due to main bearing and case wear. If it hasn't had a failure yet there is no reason that it should fail now. Most likely the end will come from a failure of a support system such as a radiator or hose failure. My FUN BUS (1987 Syncro Westy) is currently getting painted but the engine is original, never opened with 254K on it. Wish I could say the same for the tranny. The 1.9 engine in my 85 manual Vanagon has 198,000 miles. Never been opened for any reason. Runs smooth as silk. Gentle driving, burns no oil, always passes smog, power seems about the same as always. Wondering how long this thing can last? What's the best way to get some idea, compression test?
