I did, and emailed Jim. He says it can be set up and tuned to work well, it’s just that we lame-ass AT drivers are also a PITA when it comes to support. Also, a 3 speed AT with a direct final drive is not optimal, but you will get better gas mileage ‘cause you can’t drive it as hard. I’m experienced enough as a DIYer to deal with tweaking and tuning, so it’s still in the mix. I’ve found one that was professionally done here, and will meet with the owner soon.

Ha, I'm looking for the same, just few thousand miles away in N. Virginia!! Jim Akiba addressed the concerns about the Zetec with and automatic a few days ago here on the list, did you see his posting? I have the same, '85 Westy with an automatic.

I'm researching Subaru vs. Bostig engine swaps for my '85 Westy. Lots of questions regarding the Bostig with an automatic transmission. But, the favored 1995-1996 Subaru engine is old, and later models have lots of installation problems. I'd love to talk to someone around here who might take me for a ride as well.

Thanks!

Stuart
