hi..
that's a very big question..

in waterboxers it's a stock 2.1 .
then there is 'The One' I really recommend ..a Chris Corkin tencentlife
Better 2.2 waterboxer ..
expensive and takes a while to get one.
there are also 2.3's out there.

in subaru there are about 6 to chose from.............. at least 4 four
cylinder ones , and two six cylinder engines, at least.

there is the Ford Zetec .
There's the inline gas four VW engine ...
   1.8 8-volve  ones, 2.0 ABA ones, 16vavle 1.8 and 2.0 engines ..

then there is the 5 Valves-per-cylinder 1.8 Turbo VW engine , very late
model engine.
Then there is the the  VR6 and even V-6 engine by VW.
There's an inline 5 Audi engine too.

There is the Nissan V-6 .

and in VW diesel ...about 6 choices there ..
best ones are 1.9 TD and TDI ...and there are 5 cylinder TDI's too.

I suggest people decide 'gas or diesel' first ..
if it's gasoline ..
the more common ones are Subaru,
the Zetec and inline four gas VW engines.

it's like asking 'which kind of church should I go to? "
