Likely you are NOT, but are you using a socket like this? image:

If it were me, I'd either shape the end of a piece of rod to ID of bushing with a flat shoulder for bushing to rest on, or, use some threaded rod, smaller than hole in bushing, put a nut with flat face on rod, tap bushing in. It sounds like the bushing is getting started slightly cockeyed and is jamming.
